Emma

Sorry I have been doing a lot of simple pencil drawings, I don't have the stamina for oil paintings right now like I had hoped. ;) But these are still really fun, and I love children's expressions! This is my sister's niece, and I hear Emma's older brother had just grabbed her birthday hat when this picture was taken. Thank you candid camera :)

Week 7: California in the Spring

Mixed Media illustration

All the trees are starting to turn green, pink, purple, and white. I love it!! This is an interesting way to show a place, but my place for the week is northern california, and the blossoms on these trees show that spring is here :)

And more.

Multimedia illustrations.

More of the flowers. It is fun to use those watercolor textures I made a few weeks ago, and I am discovering how amazing technology is when it comes to making certain types of art. Again the beautiful floral photography was done by Cate Sheffer. (Check out her other floral shots here!)She is my hero.

Week 6: Hong Kong Temple

Oil Pastel on card stock. 5 x 7 in.

I had the wonderful opportunity to visit this beautiful building in Hong Kong in January. As I was thinking of a place to draw this week, this place, now one of my favorite places came to mind. It is a simple drawing, but some places don't need much embellishment, and are beautiful because of what they are.

Old Portraits

Ronald Hansen: Oil Paint on canvas. 16 x 20 in.
Engaged. Oil on canvas. 8 x 10 in.
Cate and Morgan. Oil on Canvas. 8 x 10 in.
Roommates. Oil on Hardboard. 11 x 14 in.

I wish I could do all these in one week! These again were done in the past year or two, the top one is my grandpa, the next two were a wedding present for my best friend, and the one of my roommates was for my history of creativity class final project. (I love when I can tie homework and painting together ;) It includes critical elements from all the major art movements. It was really fun to do ;)

Old still life paintings

Paper crane: Oil Paint on Hardboard. 9 x 10 in.
Bottles: Oil on hardboard. 9 x 10 in.
Candles: Acrylic on canvas. 5 x 12 in.

I found these pictures on my computer, I had forgotten about these paintings. The top two were done as part of a class I took at BYU, and the candle one was done a few years ago, my mom has this thing to candles and they are actually really fun to paint! So these weren't done this week and they aren't a portrait or place, but I thought some classic still lifes were worth a post ;)

Consider the lilies

Mixed Media on canvas. 12 x 12 in.

I have wanted to do a picture of lilies for a long time. I love the verses in Matthew 6:28-30, and lilies are beautiful! I particularly like waterlilies because they are in such a harsh environment for a flower, but they somehow manage to stay afloat ;)
These paintings were done with a collage of scrapbook paper, and then I painted over it with acrylic. I love doing these kind of paintings!!

Week 5: Sister K's Grandparents

Contay crayon on toned paper. 8 x 11 in.

There is an amazing sister missionary serving in our ward from Tonga! We call her Sister K and she was raised by her grandparents in Tonga while the rest of her family lives in New Zealand. Her grandfather passed away while she has been serving her mission and she was unable to attend the funeral, and she only has one picture of him. These drawings were done from a small picture taken at a theme park and I really wish I could have seen them smile, she said they are happy, fun loving people but would never smile in pictures ;) I love love love drawing people because each person has their own story, experiences, and people who love them. I wish I could capture it all better.

Textures

Watercolor on watercolor paper. 9 x 11 in.

I am experimenting, and just did these for fun. They will probably turn up as layers in artwork to come but I am loving all the textures that watercolors can create!

Berries

Watercolor on watercolor paper. 9 x 11 in.

I am experimenting with texture, composition, and coloring. I have always been a super realistic artist and it is really refreshing to not stress the detail so much and just see what happens.

Week 5: Jamestown

Watercolor on watercolor paper. 9 x 11 in.

I love how unpredictable watercolors can be, and they are super relaxing. I really need that right now ;) This was taken from a picture of historic Jamestown Virginia. Photography done my Cate Sheffer.

Week 4: Maggie

Copic Marker on Paper. 9 x 7 in.

This is the daughter of the lady who let me use her fun markers. I had no idea you could do skin tones with markers!

Tuesday, March 2, 2010

Peony

Copic marker on paper. 4 x 6 in.

A really nice lady in our ward heard I like art and brought by some Copic markers for me to try. I still am learning how to use them but I have been wanted to do this picture from our house in Illinois for a while. The markers are pretty fun! Yeah for scrap booking clubs :)

Week 4: Thunderbird Falls Trail

Watercolor on Watercolor Paper. 9 x 12 in.

This trail leads to the thunderbird falls in Alaska and my family lived right next to it for 4 years. I can't remember how many times we hiked it, but it was really fun being able to hop over our fence, and then be in a national park :)I miss Alaska so much!! If you ever get a chance to visit, it is one of the most beautiful places on earth :)
